The Chester Location

Halton House is within walking distance of Chester's historic centre; a walk best enjoyed along the banks of the Shropshire Union Canal where colourful narrow boats can be seen negotiating the picturesque locks.  The nearby Mill Hotel has a floating restaurant on the canal too.

In the centre you can visit Chester's rich Roman heritage, the Ampitheatre and ancient walls.  Chester's sites of Roman occupation, ruins and artifacts are too numerous to mention here.  Should you have a rainy day The Dewa Roman Experience provides an indoor encounter with Romans not to be missed.

You can enjoy a leisurely river cruise along the beatiful River Dee at the Groves.  For the more energetic there are rowing boats and pedal boats to hire by the hour ... but watch out for the weir, it's best left to the serious conoeists!  You may even spot the Chester Rowing club out practising.

In the commercial centre you can marvel at the black and white timbered architecture of Chester's famous Rows.  Many of these ancient and amazing shops date back to Medievel times whilst others are clever Victorian reproductions displying amazing craftsmanship in timber, plaster and glass.  You will find a wealth of fabulous shops and restaurants with internationally famous brand names amongst the dozens of unique and independent small shops.

If you enjoy a day at the races you can visit Chester's famous Roodee where horses have been raced and gambled on for 500 years.  The annual Ladies day meeting every May brings out the all the extravagances of high fashion to rival Ascot anyday!

A short car journey will take you to the famous Chester Zoo which plays a huge role in the conservation of endangered species and is a wonderful day out for all ages.  Apart from the fascinating animals, the gardens are quite magnificent and there's a monorail and boat safari to help you enjoy your visit.   For more encounters with the natural world, The Blue Planet Aquarium is just 5 minutes further and has Europe's longest underwater viewing tunnel.  Watch in amazement as the huge sharks glide above and beside you, it's an experience you won't want to forget.
